A garage rock band from Camden, Tennessee in the mid-60s. They released one 45 on Canary Records.

History[edit | edit source]

Member Will Richardson commented on garagehangover.com: "The Drummer for the Tangle was Robert Hayes. His father owned a Teen Club in Camden and I believe he had the connections that lead them to Canary Records. My Name is Will Richardson from Erin Tn. I replaced Alvin Holland who was well loved by the other band members but his alcohol use on gig nights forced the band to get a replacement. Although Ronnie Waters was not as smooth as Alvin Holland He was Quite a great Player. I worked with them after the Canary Release. I have most of a Box of stashed NOS records of the Tangle in the Original Box. No disrespect to Mr. Holland this is what Ronnie Told me with the others present. I do believe that Alvin and Nyman are cousins possibly first Cousins. On ancestry it appears that Nyman’s mother was a Holland before she married. I would Spend the night in Camden after the gig and Drive to Erin REAL early as my beloved mother Billie Richardson required I go to Church if I played a club late on Saturday Night. I would Sleep in the family quarters of the jail with Nyman and his family. I played pretty well but I picked up Licks from Ronnie many of which he got from Alvin. Alvin sat in a few times at the teen club. I believe it was more enticing to stay sober and look good since he was removed from the band. He was quite smooth as most lefties are. He and Waters played Gretsches and while I worked with Them Waters traded to a Sunburst 335 Which actually was not as big sounding as the Gretsch (even though I have never owned a Gretsch but have owned Many 335s)."

After The Tangle, Holland, Waters, and Furr played in Maggie Lee and The Percussions, a rockabilly group formed by Maggie Lee Stout and her husband Joe "Willie" Stout out of West Tennessee, primarily Union City and Martin.

Nyman Furr later founded The Little Juice Band that played frequently across the South, from the Florida panhandle to Louisiana. He passed away in 2007.

Ronnie Waters later founded the Tennessee River Crooks band, a southern rock group mostly out of Paris, TN in the 1970s. According to an interview with "Sweet Home Music" blog, "In May of 1977, the band lost a dear friend and integral part of the band, when Ronny Waters was killed in New Johnsonville, Tennessee." Referred to as Ronny by his bandmates in Tennessee River Crooks, Waters graces the second pressing of their album, printed after his death.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiLxlbsvDjE Notes: Canary 1012 - Nashville TN USA 1966. Snotty arrogant teen rant with subtle explicit lyrics. Excellent. Group included Nyman Furr (sings here) who was a local celebrity later playing outsider folk and country music with his band The Little Juice Band. Nyman passed almost exactly ten years ago, and Alvin Holland the guitarist died in 2012 so this post is dedicated to them.

"After a number of years enjoying this on display in my study, I have decided to pass this extremely rare record on to a serious collector.  This item is the 1967 lp, "It's Time for the Percussions" on Allendale Records (Memphis).  The album cover is signed by all four members, Maggie Lee Stout (1941-2021), husband Joe "Willie" Stout (1942-2016), James "Poly" Stanfill (1946-2016), and the last surviving member, Maggie's brother Pete Tate.  They were from the Union City, Tennessee (Midway Community), Greenfield, and Bradford, Tennessee area.  Maggie and Joe also owned and operated a club in Martin, Tennessee for many years.  Joe and I talked about this album after I first acquired it many years ago.  He told me only 500 copies were produced and they quickly sold out at their next public appearances.  He and Maggie didn't even own a copy."
