A group including member of The Saturns Combo, whose only single was released in 1966.

History[edit | edit source]

Produced by Tony Moon, previously of The Casuals, their single was released on Showcase Records, a subsidiary of Pickwick International, where Bill Davidson, songwriter for the Charades and member of The Saturns also worked as songwriter. The A-side track, "A Stubborn Kind of Fellow" was a popular cover song in the mid-60s written by Motown founder Berry Gordy with Marvin Gaye and William Stevenson, that was also covered on a release by Charlie McCoy & The Escorts on Monument in 1965. The original composition on the single "You Can Destroy My Mind," was written by Pat Patrick and published by Barmour Music, where Tony Moon and Bill Davidson worked together.

In the mid-sixties, the band was also performing under the name "The Fabulous Beach-Nutz" shortened occasionally to the "Beach Nutz Combo" in reference to the popularity of beach music during that time. A newspaper write-up for a band play-off in 1966 highlighted the group's performance at the event emceed by radio DJ Captain Midnight and judged by "Night Train" host Noble Blackwell, and A&R reps Felton Jarvis, and Ray Stevens, then of Monument Records. Notably a committee member for the event included the mother of local musician Tupper Saussy, later of The Neon Philharmonic.

The songs were recorded at Owen Bradley's Studio on Old Hickory Lake, commonly called "Bradley's Barn," before it burned, according to Bill Davidson. Stuart Keathley later died in a housefire in the late 1970s. At the time of death, he was working for Ray Stevens. This studio session represented the last musical output from Frank Stephens. Bill Davidson would go to work with Tony Moon and wrote several sides for The Lemonade Charade, eventually joining the group before they disbanded.
