Named after the Washington Monument in DC, where the label was originally created by Fred Foster and Buddy Deane, who left the label early on, the company moved to Hendersonville, where Foster partnered with session musician Bob Moore.

Subsidiary labels of Monument include Sound Stage 7, focused on R&B and Soul, and later associated with John Richbourg, and a short-lived label called Rising Sons, affiliated with Buzz Cason and Bobby Russell.
