History[edit | edit source]

Originally owned by Nashboro Record Co..as the blues division of Nashboro/Nashboro Records. Founded by Ernie Young in 1952 in Nashville TN. Best-known artist was Slim Harpo ("Scratch My Back"). Sold in the end to AVI Records.

Southern entrepreneur Ernie Young was the founder of the Excello label, which has attained almost legendary status among blues and R&B fans. Young's labels were off-shoots of Ernie's Record Mart, a Nashville- based shop and mail order operation launched in 1950, when Young had already reached the advanced age of 57, after a career as a real estate businessman.
